The male condom is a thin sheath that covers the erect penis during sexual intercourse. It is one of the most widely practiced methods of birth control around the world. It is more commonly used than either oral contraceptive pills or IUDs and much more effective than the rhythm method.Condoms are meant to cover the erect penis and collect the semen, thus preventing the sperm from coming in contact with the ovum.
Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCP), or birth control pills as they are more commonly called, are a hormonal method of contraception. All oral contraceptives discovered so far are applicable only to the female. No pills for males have been discovered, although research is on to find a suitable hormone preparation.Almost all the OCP’s are combinations of the female hormones, estrogen, and progesterone.
Tubectomy is a type of birth control. It is commonly referred to as “getting your tubes tied.” It is a surgery that keeps a woman from getting pregnant. It closes off her fallopian tubes. These tubes carry an egg from the ovary to the uterus each month. Sperm swim up the fallopian tubes to join with the egg, resulting in pregnancy. When the tubes are closed, the egg and sperm cannot reach each other. This prevents pregnancy.
An IUCD (Intrauterine Contraceptive Device) or IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a small, usually plastic, device that is inserted into a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy. The concept of intrauterine devices started in the middle ages when Arabs used to insert small pebbles or stones in the uterus of female camels to prevent pregnancy.IUD’s for human use came to be scientifically designed in the early part of this century.
